Wanslea Camp for Kids

Description

Who doesn't love a camp? Children in foster care and their foster sisters and brothers often don't have the same opportunities to have the awesome camping experiences that other children do. Wanslea would like to run a camp with the theme 'Culture and Family' to help children in care connect with one another, with their culture and with the foster carers' own children. At camp kids are able to relax, express themselves and do activities that they otherwise wouldn't. We will have traditional Aboriginal sports and games, Aboriginal art activities, some African cultural learning and access to great adventure and trust building activities. Youth mentors who have grown up in foster families will assist the camp leaders to build a supportive and peer based positive learning environment for children in care.

Social Impact

Children attending camp will learn about culture, the value of family and be exposed to many challenging physical and social activities. They will establish trust with peers and with youth mentors who can teach them positive ways to express their emotions and feelings around some of the trauma that they have experienced. It is expected that children will benefit from this rich experience with new friendships and with a better sense of self. Although this will not 'fix' all of the problems faced by children in care, it is a step in the right direction of personal development for them and ultimately for their foster and birth families.

Track Record

Last year we ran a camp focused on culture and 40 children in care and their foster brothers and sisters benefited. Foster families have been keenly awaiting the next camp, which will be bigger and better than last year. Wanslea has been running activities for children for over 70 years and has received support from government and corporate agencies and has shown excellent outcomes for children. This year we don't have the funding to run this camp without your support.

Hurdles to overcome

Funding- this is a tight funding environment and we are unable to fund this camp without your support.
